Newnham is located on the banks of the sweeping horseshoe bend of the River Severn. The village has a tree-lined main street, famous for its mass of picturesque daffodils in the spring time. Many listed buildings line the High Street and in the centre you will see the prominent clock tower. You will find some delightful shops, selling local crafts, antiques, books, porcelain and pottery, post office, village stores as well as a delicatessen and library.
In addition the village supports a pleasant hotel near the church, two public houses, two pubs and two cafes as well as a number of good quality bed and breakfasts.
The church stands on high ground at the top of the High Street where you can see the horseshoe bend of the Severn and views across to the Cotswolds beyond.
Newnham is one of the few places where you can get close to the River Severn, but take care as the water is tidal and the currents very strong. The river is famous for the Bore that starts to gather pace at Newnham, racing across the sands faster than a man can run and building into a crashing wave some 2 metres high further upstream. From here at the right times, surfers can be seen catching the bore to ride upstream towards Gloucester - just as the old boats did before the opening of the Sharpness to Gloucester Canal.
